Obituary Mildred Steward Chiles |
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?... Psalm 27-1 A TIME TO BE BORN Mildred Steward Chiles, daughter of the late William Steward and Myrtle Steward, was born on December 7, 1927 in Johnson City, Tennessee. She was the second of three siblings; a sister, Minnie jean Steward Pookrum, of Bowie, Maryland, and a brother, William B. Steward, Jr. (deceased).
A TIME TO PLANT Mildred received her education in Johnson City, Tennessee and graduated from Langston Senior High School. She continued her education attending A&I in Nashville, Tennessee. Her career led her to come to Washington, D.C. in 1946, where she obtained employment. Mildred's exemplary work at the Bureau of Printing & Engraving, and the Bureau of Vital Statistics earned her multiple honors. She retired from these positions in 1984.
A TIME TO TRANSFORM Mrs. Chiles was a dedicated member of Florida Avenue Baptist Church, which she joined in 1951 by letter from Thankful Baptist Church in Johnson City, Tennessee. Her faithful service included membership on the Financial Committee, the Women's club, the Missionary circle and several years as church secretary. She was among the founding members of the Social Service Committee that not only fed senior citizens, but fed homeless people as well. Mildred's and Samuel's diligent work, serving and delivering many dinners, helped build the new church edifice. She also lent her voice to the Missionary Chorus.
A TIME TO LIVE Mildred would have been married to Samuel Chiles, the love of her life, 61 years on December 29, 2006. She dedicated her life not only to her beloved husband Sam, but also to the enrichment of family and friends.
A TIME TO JOIN HER HEAVENLY FATHER In the quiet morning hours on Thursday, November 23, 2006 at Prince George's General Hospital in Cheverly, Maryland, Mildred S. Chiles peacefully met God. Her gentle and quite spirit was ready to be received back into His Grace. God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be anymore pain, for the former things are passed away. Revelations 21
