Obituary  John Winston Harris

John Winston Harris, a native Washingtonian, was born to the late Winston B. and MyrIe E. Harris on August 19, 1936.

He entered into eternal rest an November 1, 2007, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital, Washington, DC.  Johnny, as he was called, was active in sports from an early age At the YMCA and Boys' Club, He took boxing lessons and met and made many life-long friends He was well liked by many people as he had an easygoing, pleasant personality. He attended public schools in the District of Columbia. While at Cardozo High School he excelled in sport football baseball and basketball  Over the years, he took an active interest in the welfare and development of the younger members of, not just his family, but also of his friends. After his retirement from the Army, he attended Burlington Community College in New Jersey for one year  He was inducted into the U. S. Army in January of 1962 and retired in April of 1982. He served two tours of duty in Panama and also two in Vietnam where he earned the Bronze Star Medal for "Meritorious Achievement in Ground Operations Against Hostile Forces" (1971). He also received other awards for outstanding performance during his twenty years of military service while stationed in the Canal Zone and at the West Point Military Academy. He often stated that "He found his place in fife in the U.S. Army" and that he was" proud to be a soldier" He was told at times that he was "a soldier's soldiers

His marriage to Barbara Gregory Harris ended in divorce.He leaves to mourn, his devoted wife, Juanita Redman Harris; two sons, Reginald Nelson and John Garner; one stepson, Dion Redman; one stepdaughter, Vida Johnson, two grandsons, a granddaughter, two step-granddaughters, nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lanita Odom of Willingboro, NJ, Elaine Chiles and Dolores Scott and brother, Lawrence Harris, all of Washington, DC. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
