Obituary Gertrude Mae Ward Hunt Jenkins Harris

GERTRUDE MAE WARD HUNT JENKINS HARRIS, daughter of the late Charles and Martha Ward, was born August 7, 1904 in Henderson, North Carolina. She departed this life on Sunday, June 4, 1989 after a lengthy illness. Wife of Winston Harris

 

At an early age, she joined St. Mary A. M. E. Zion Church in Bobbitt, North Carolina. She completed her formal education at Henderson Institute, Henderson, North Carolina.

In 1927, she moved to Washington, D. C. Subsequently, she became a member of John Wesley A. M. E. Zion Church. She served her Church for many years as a member of the Missionary Society No. 1, The August Birthday Club, and as Leader of Class No. 3.

 

Mrs. Harris was a kind and gentle person, whose home and table were always opened to whomever stopped by. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Surviving. are six children, Eris H. Holmes, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Berline H. Norris, Washington, D. C.; Shirlee H. Craig, Silver Spring, Maryland; Robert Q. Jenkins, Inglewood, California; Jean J. Favoris, Bronx, New York; and Charles R. Jenkins, Munich, Germany; eight grandchildren, Shelia Jackson, Laurence Norris, Reng Norris, Dr. Katrina Peters, Reginald Jenkins, Robert Jenkins, Jeanell Favoris, and Joey Favoris; eight great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mozella Bess, Mary Lee Johnson, and Addie B. Jones of Henderson, North Carolina; and Delores McKnight of Brooklyn, New York; other relatives and many friends.
