Obituary Essie Chiles Covington

Essie Chiles Covington peacefully departed this life on January 5, 1989, 11:35 a.m. at Liberty Medical Center, Baltimore, Md. She was born August 15, 1895 in Abbeville, South Carolina to the late Brunsic and Elizabeth Harris. She was married to Samuel Chiles and Thomas Covington, who preceded her in death.

Essie Chiles Covington came to the metro area in 1945 where, she became a devoted and dedicated member of the Friendship Baptist Church. She had a strong belief in God and determination to do what was right. Always smiling and speaking of God's goodness, his mercy and his many blessings; never a conversation with family, neighbors and friends without a word about the Lord. And if they were distressed, they could find needed strength after conversing with her. She was a busy person, industrious and often attempted to do things far beyond her physical strength.

Recently, she told her children she wanted to go home, but little did the family think she was not talking about her earthly home but her heavenly home. On Thursday, January 5, 1989, God sent a messenger and she went home to her maker.

She leaves with memories to cherish forever, one daughter, Ethel Ervin of Johnson City, Tennessee; two sons, Samuel Chiles of Largo, Maryland and James Chiles of Clinton, Maryland; three daughters-in-law, Mildred, Helen and Emera Louis Chiles; one devoted sister-in-law, Mamie Gardner of Evanston, Illinois; twenty-five grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends
