Obituary  Emma Louis Chiles Montgomery

           On Sunday February 21, 2016 at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C., the Lord called home His faithful and humble servant, Emma Louis Chiles Montgomery to dwell in Heaven forever more.

 

She was welcomed into life on February 15, 1925 in Johnson City, TN, the third of five children, to the late John Wesley Young and Willie Beatrice Young Loller.

She accepted Christ at an early age and attended St. Paul AME Zion Church where she was active in the youth department and was a member of the choir. Emma was educated in the Johnson City School system and attended Langston High School where she participated in the chorus, glee club, and cheerleading.

 

She married John Wesley Chiles on November 3, 1943. From their union were born four sons, Samuel Patrick, Jerry Wayne, John Wesley, Jr, and David Allen.

She moved to Washington, DC in 1949 where she joined and became a devoted member of Friendship Baptist Church where she served the Lord faithfully on the Woman's Usher board, praised the Lord with her beautiful hymns in the Woman's Choir, worked as the church clerk, devoted time to mentoring young women in His Holy Words, and helped establish the Senior Citizens Activities Ministry - creating arts and crafts and studying the Bible. Emma loved to sing and would even rejoin the St. Paul AME Zion choir to sing when she made visits back home to Johnson City.

 

Once in Washington, DC she furthered her education by attending nursing school. She took care of patients at the Home for incurables in Washington, DC and was also a private duty nurse. After Emma retired from nursing she loved to spend time with her beloved grandchildren and at church.  She married Rev. Dr. William Henry Montgomery on November 11, 1989 and became the esteemed First Lady of Friendship Baptist church. As the First Lady of Friendship Baptist church Emma set a fine example of a loving and supportive wife. Her devotion to the church and the congregation was unrivaled and she gracefully executed her duties.

 

Emma was a devout Christian, a Godly woman who had a deep relationship with the Lord. She instilled in her sons, grandchildren, and anyone whose life she touched to love God and put God first before all.  Emma loved to talk to her friends and family, write letters, send cards and always give a kind word. she was a mother and friend to many.  she was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather lsaac Loller, brothers John Wesley and William Harold, husbands John and William, son Jerry Wayne, and grandson Jimmy.

 

She leaves to cherish her memory her sons Samuel of Clinton, MD, John (Diana) of Ft. Washington, MD, and David (Margaret) of Waldorf, MD; grandchildren Catherine, Earnest, Jerry Wayne, Jr., Kenny, Michelle, Davone, David, Jr., Jeri, and John; 1-9 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. she also leaves her beloved sisters Mary Hazel of Flint, Ml and Barbara (Richard) of Johnson City, TN; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
