Carl Lee Swinney, Sr. was born on March 28, 1930 to the late Fred and Mabel Swinney in Washington, DC. He was the youngest of six children. His siblings are: Fred Jr., Carrie, Ophelia Inez, and William (all deceased).
Carl was born in the Henrietta Apartments next to Salem Baptist Church and claimed to have been a member of Salem Baptist Church all of his natural born life.
Carl was educated in the D.C. Public School System, He attended Banneker Jr. High School, where he met his future bride Annette McCard at Armstrong Senior High School.
Carl married Annette on May 3I, 1947 at the age of seventeen (she was sixteen). From this union, they had four beautiful children: Linda Carlene (deceased), Carl Jr., and Pamela (deceased). As a young married couple with small children, Carl and Annette learned many lessons from older couples with children that helped their marriage last for over 67 years. Carl worked many jobs to provide for his family. After working for DC General Hospital, he joined the federal government and retired after 38 years of service. Carl obtained his cab license at the beginning of his work career and continued to 'hack' even after retirement from the government.
Growing up, Carl enjoyed playing basketball and later became a member of the National Old timers Basketball Club. This Club was for men over the age of 35 years old who still loved to play basketball. The Club consisted of teams that traveled to various cities throughout the country and played each other. Following the games, they socialized and enjoyed each other’s company. Carl was a proud member of the *Old timers" and was National President for two years and the local president for twenty years. Carl enjoyed getting hips together for the club members and their families, Carl was also a Mason
Carl enjoyed spending time with his family and even got his family together to buy an A-Class Recreational Vehicle (RV). Spending time traveling in the RV to Tennessee, Florida and Myrtle Beach with the family (wife, children, and grandchildren) was a source of fun, joy, and excitement for the entire family. After the family outgrew the RV, they continued to vacation together every year.
He is survived by his loving wife, Annette Swinney; daughter: Linda (James) Satterthrwaite; Son: Carl (DiaMarie) Swinney, Jr.; son-in-law Frank (Pam-deceased) Hooker; grandchildren: John (Paulette) Satterthwaite; Nicole (Stephen Sr.) Brown; Cameron (Victoria) Satterthwaite; Lawrence (Trina) Ferguson; Terrence (Eve) Ferguson; Nikea (Ryan) Jones; and Tenisha Samms; and a host of great grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. |
