Obituary Ulice Hugh Williams

             Ulice Hugh Williams passed in peace on October 4, 2014 at the age of 90. Ulice was born the sixth child of the late Hugh C. and Mary Nina Vann Penny Williams on March 16, 1924. He joined Springfield Baptist Church in l939, was educated in the Wake County Public School System attending Garner Colored School.

 

             On May 1, 1944 Ulice was drafted into the United States Army to serve in WWII. He reported for service on May 11, 1944 at Fort Bragg, NC. After completing Engineering Basic Demolition training he served in France as a Demolition Man dismantling mines and booby traps. Ulice also served in Korea driving trucks carrying building materials and natives to job sites. It was there that he received carpenter training developing his skill and love for carpentry. In August 1946 Ulice was honorably discharged. For his service in the US Army and WWII he recei;ed EAME Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and Occupation Medal in Korea. Ulice also received a letter of Honor from President Harry Truman.

 

             After leaving the army, Ulice worked as a carpenter and foreman at Daniels Construction Company. In 1957 he begin; his career at Wake County Public School working as a custodian at Garner Consolidated.  From there he became Lead Custodian at Athens Drive High School. In 1985 he retired as Director of Custodial Services for Wake County Public Schools. In addition to his work at Daniels Construction and Wake County Public Schools he enjoyed carpentry, building cabinets, bureaus, and other wooden structures including the pulpit in the second Springfield Baptist Church sanctuary. With his experience as a foreman and skilled carpenter Ulice completed residential renovations and development. This talent and gift help create homes for his children, grandchildren and provided housing, to man-y.in the community.  Ulice was a proud carpenter, often saying "Jesus was a carpenter." He enjoyed using his gift to help others around him.

 

             Ulice married Hildred Virginia Rand on August 3, 1947. Ulice and Hildred were married for 63 years. Ulice and Hildred shared their love of family and community, dedicating and committing their lives to raising and supporting their children and grandchildren. Their love for family and community help build a strong bond within the Williams’ family that is admirable and provide their children and grandchildren with strong work ethics that would allow them to live productive, and prosperous lives. He would say" God said if man don't work, he won't eat; Man must work while it is day because once it is night he cannot work."

 

             Ulice was raised in Springfield Baptist Church watching and admiring his father Hugh C Williams as a member of the Deacon board. He served on the Deacon Board for many years. He was Chairman of the Building Committee and help lead the way for Springfield’s expansion into the second sanctuary in 1990 and the acquisition of 40 acres of land, which is the current facility, built in 2002. His leadership as Building Chairman with the likes of his brother Deacon Lenton Williams and Pastor Sanders help set in place the current infrastructure which allowed for the building of our current sanctuary facility and the future Family Life Center. In addition to his role as a Deacon and Building Chairman, Ulice was a member of the Hugh C Williams Laymen League (named after his father and led by his brother Lenton Williams for many years). Ulice and his brothers Morris and Lenton spent a great deal of time together working various ministries of Springfield Baptist Church. Ulice was recognized as Deacon Emeritus in 2OO7.

 

             Ulice was a member of the Excelsior Lodge #2I, Boyer Consistory #219, and Kabala Temple #I77. He was recognized in 20O1 for 34 years of service to the lodge. Ulice was actively engaged in the community and knowledgeable about issues related not only to his community but also to his state and country. He was an avid listener of conservative talk radio (WPTF) and he was not shy about giving his opinion on the issues facing our society.

 

             Ulice leaves to cherish his memory and legacy; Five Children, Ulice E. Williams (Annette), Marie Evans (Warrie Jr.), Morris Williams (Angela), Clara W. Chavis, and Donald Williams (Carmen), all of Raleigh; Eleven grandchildren Sonia Leach of Clayton, NC, Felicia Woodard(Adolph), Knight4ale, NC, Warrie Evans III, Raleigh, NC, Phillip Evans, Raleigh, NC, Ulice Lamont Williams (Donna) of Cary, NC, Tisha Williams of Knightdale, NC, Donald Williams, Marquita Chavis, Maria Williams, Morris Williams of Raleigh, NC, and Alvin Stefan Evans (Tia) of Clayton, NC; Sixteen Great-Grandchildren, Christopher, Kymori, Travion, Erika, Eain, Aaron, Jayla, Chamya, Mheky, Cyonni,Joshua, Cameron, Katherine Bailey, Carter, Hunter, and Ashlin Marie; Adopted Great-grandchildren, Deon, Jaboree, and Jaylen; One brother, Pete C. Williams, (Florien) of Raleigh, NC, two sisters Emma Davidson and Shirley Tomlinson (George), of Raleigh. NC. three brothers-in-law Kimber Rand and Charles Peppers of Raleigh, NC and Isaiah Goodson, Sr. of Knightdale, NC, both of Raleigh, two sisters-in-law Audrey Williams of Raleigh and Hattie Rand of Durham, NC a Special Cousins, Dave Penny (Michelle), Deneen Rymes, and Alison Penny of Baltimore, MD and a host of nieces, cousins, and friends.
