In the stillness of Saturday evening, October 26, 1985, the Angel of Mercy came and claimed the life of Joe E. Wortham. He humbly and quietly slipped into  a peaceful eternal sleep at Granville Hospital in Oxford, N.C. after an extended illness.

Joe was a person of many good qualities and only one personality, which was always pleasing. He possessed an abundance of love for mankind. He loved all he knew and met and was liked by all his acquaintances. Even in the midst of his pain and suffering he still maintained a radiant smile. He was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever it was needed, regardless to the one in need. He will be missed by all who knew him, his place in our hr>me can never be filled and his memory will never cease to remain in our hearts and our home.

He was united with the Pettiford Grove l3aptist Church in 1959, and was employed by the Mt. Hope Finishing Co. of Creedmoor, N.C. He received his education in the Granville County School System.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Hall Wortham of the home, a son, Joe E. Wortharn, Jr., of Durham, N.C., his parents; Mr. Wilmrore Wortham and Mrs. Dora P. Wortham of Kittrell, N.C., Four brothers: Willie Wortham of Piscataway, NJ., Walter Wortham of Winston Salem, N.C., William Wortham of Creedmoor, N.C., and Hughley Wortham of Oxford, N.C.
