Charles Theodore
Posey was born on Monday, October 3, 1932 in Washington, D.C. He was the
youngest of four sons born to the late James and Lillian Posey. He attended
the District of Columbia Public Schools. After high school, he enlisted in
the National Guard and served for two years. Afterwards, he enlisted in the
United States Air Force. In 1950,-Charles was baptized in the Name of Jesus
at the Way of the Cross Church of Christ, Washington, D.C. Later that year,
he married his childhood sweetheart, Dorothy Mae Green on November 18,
1950. To this union five daughters were born. During his military service Charles
traveled to various locations such as Korea, Vietnam, Turkey, Greece,
France, and Panama. He also attended the Management School for Air Force Supervisors,
Air Force Maintenance School, and Non-Commission Leadership School. He
performed duties as a hydraulic mechanic, hydraulic supervisor, and
hydraulic instructor. In addition to receiving the Air Force Commendation
Medal for meritorious service, he received various accommodations and
medals. Charles retired from military life in June 1969 with an honorable
discharge after 20 years of dedicated service to his country. Charles worked hard throughout the years
to raise and provide for his family. After his retirement from the
military, he worked for the now defunct Macke Company in Cheverly,
Maryland. Later, he was employed with and retired from the United States
Postal Services where he received an Outstanding Leadership Award. In 1978,
he graduated from Prince George's Community College with an Associates of
Arts degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Charles was a fixture in his community. He served as a father to not
only his children, but the neighborhood children as well. At the time of
his death, he was known as the "grandfather" of the block. All
the children loved and respected him and called him grandpa. For many
years, he would pick up the neighborhood children and take them to and from
school each day. Many of the teenagers and young adults would seek his
advice and council. Charles had a quiet spirit and a big heart. He did not
hesitate to lend a helping hand to those in need. His education and work
experience led him to become a mechanical genius and he could fix anything
from air conditioning, carpentry, landscaping, car repair to science fair
projects ... he was a jack of all trades. He even gave tips to the
neighborhood mailman on how to repair things. Charles was a genuine loving and
dedicated man. This past November, Charles and Dorothy celebrated 57 years
of marriage. He was a beloved husband and father. He departed this life on
Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at his residence after a brief illness. He
leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Dorothy M. Posey, four
daughters Barbara E. Powell (David), Dennese P. Teele (William), Robin
Hope-Williams (Romulus) and Kimberly Meyer-Chambers; twelve grandchildren,
twenty-two great grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, five
sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, one aunt Erma Howard, two devoted
cousins Tina Bell and Marion Harlan and a host of nieces, nephews and
cousins. One daughter, Charlene T. Horton, and his three brothers Calvin,
Melvin and James preceded him in death.
