Calvin Leon Posey
departed this earthly life on Monday March 26, 2007. Born in Washington, DC
on February 18, 1928, he was the eldest of four sons born to the late James
and Lillian Posey. He attended the DC Public Schools graduating with honors
from Phelps Senior High School. Calvin completed additional studies in
Electronics and Business Management. He furthered his education by
attending Federal City College.Calvin served honorably in the US Army and
continued his military career with the DC Army National Guard where Calvin
retired as a Sergeant First Class in 1989. He was employed by St
Elizabeth's Hospital/National Institute of Mental Health from 1960 to 1989.
During his employment, he was awarded with special honors because of his
outstanding work with patients. In addition to his full time job, he owned
and operated a painting Contracting business for a number of years. After
retiring from St Elizabeth's and the DC National Guard, Calvin worked with
the Bureau of Rehabilitation and Borger Management until his health began
to fail in 2004. He loved serving his community as a Scout Master, member
of Civic Association and Treasurer of the Progressive Twelve Social Club.
Calvin was a devoted member of the Philadelphia Open Door Church where he
served in several key positions through the years. He was Trustee and
Treasurer of the Church, Chairman of the Flea Market, President of the
Kitchen and Transportation Committees, member of the Anniversary and
Building Fund Committees, and member of Sunday School and The Brotherhood.
Preceding Calvin in death are his two brothers, James and Melvin Posey, and
wives, Mae Bertha Posey and Esther Adams Posey. Calvin leaves to cherish
and celebrate his life: Mazie Elizabeth, his wife of 23 years; one brother,
Charles (Dorothy) Posey of Riverdale MD; two brothers-inlaw, Leroy (Maggie)
Washington and Alphonzo (Julia) Washington of Washington DC; two
sisters-in-law, Norma Posey of Decatur GA and Sylvia Washington of
Washington DC; four children, Thea Gwendolyn (Bobby) Thomas of Zebulon NC,
Dawne (Duane) Orr of Charlotte NC, Jimmy (A'Bonni) Bridges of Zebulon NC,
and Maclyn Leon (Tracy) Posey of Waldorf MD; fifteen grandchildren, eleven
great-grandchildren, and a great host of nieces, nephews, other relatives
and friends.
